Curriculum Design for Graduate Programs

Build impactful academic programs with real-world relevance.

For over 30 years, I have created and taught graduate-level courses in computer science, data science, and biomedical informatics. As a Clinical Associate Professor of Computer Science in Courant at NYU in 1998, I co-created NYU’s Master's of Science in Information Systems (MSIS) program and served as its first co-director, and later its director.

Since then, I’ve continued to help institutions design and implement curricula that bridge theory and practice. At the Mount Sinai School of Medicine I designed a Master of Science in Biomedical Data Science program, and in 2024 co-designed and recruited faculty for the Saras AI Institute's online Associate of Science in AI and Bachelor of Science in AI programs.

Curriculum consulting can include:

  • Program co-design and accreditation support

  • Course creation and syllabus development

  • Academic-industry alignment strategies

  • Faculty recruiting

Case Study: Co-Design and co-staff the Saras AI Institute, an On-line, Accredited, Degree-granting AI school

Client: the Saras AI Institute and Anil Singh, the Founder and President of Saras AI
Timeline: 2023-2024

Challenge:
A successful entrepreneur and former student of mine, Anil Singh, wanted to create an on-line AI school to train students who would find good jobs in the AI boom.

Solution:
I co-led the design, development and staffing of the Saras AI Institute, a new, on-line, AI school that grants Associate of Science and Bachelor of Science degrees in AI.

I met repeatedly with Anil Singh, and recommended and executed analyses and processes to maximize Saras AI's chance of success.

Conceive, launch and run a feasibility study for Saras AI that followed the acclaimed Fall in Love with the Problem, Not the Solution process for evaluating ideas for new businesses:

  • Engage a successful startup entrepreneur, and hire an NYU Stern School of Business student to execute the feasibility study

  • Organize, lead and coordinate a comprehensive market analysis by my team

  • Identify existing on-line computer science education which we might want to emulate, and that might compete with Saras AI

Design and lead a process that recruited faculty from leading universities to design and teach Saras AI courses:

  • Recruit Professor Jean-Claude Franchitti from NYU to design and teach the Analysis of Algorithms course taught at Saras AI

  • Recruit Florence Martin, a leader in on-line learning and a Professor in Learning, Design and Technology at North Carolina State University to teach at Saras AI

Co-design, review and refine Saras AI's curricula

  • Design an Internship Capstone Projects course for Saras that's based on the ITP course I created for NYU

  • Plan Saras AI's course schedule

  • Evaluate the Saras AI course catalog

  • Write an Academic Integrity Policy for Saras AI
